Intrigues as Saraki’s Lawyer Dumps Case

It was drama at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) today as counsel to Senate President Bukola Saraki, Mahmood Mogaji walked out of the case. Mr. Mogaji’s action followed the determination of the CCT to continue the case of false declaration of assets against Saraki in spite of a stay of execution filed at the Supreme court Justice Danladi Umar ruled for the continuation of the case despite the defence counsel informing the tribunal that a motion for stay of proceedings has been filed at the Supreme Court. Mr. Magagi stated that continuing the matter would amount to what he described as judicial rascality which he insisted was against the provisions of the constitution. But prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacob argued that the case could not be adjourned indefinitely urging the tribunal to proceed with the matter. Mr. Jacob also condemned the attitude of Senators at the resumed hearing of the case, saying the conduct of the lawmakers was totally uncalled for and aimed at trivializing the trial. He added that the walkout by the defense counsel was a strategy to stall the proceedings of the case. Justice Umar gave the defendant one week to secure the services of new lawyers to represent him at the CCT and adjourned to November 19 and 20.
