The Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association (NATA), Lagos State Chapter, on Monday appealed to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State over the planned demolition of the mechanic village at Owutu, in Ikorodu area of the state.
Mr Jacob Fayeun, the NATA Chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the mechanic village had been earmarked by the Local Council Development Area (LCDA) for demolition.
Fayeun said all the artisans had been asked to vacate the premises of the village which was built and approved during the administration of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, a former Lagos State governor.
According to him, the village is the biggest in Lagos State.
The NATA chairman urged the state governor to stop any plan by the council to demolish the auto-workshop, a process, saying it would affect over 500 auto-technicians at the site.
“We are appealing to Gov. Ambode to stop any plan to demolish the mechanic village in Owutu Ikorodu, by the LCDA.
“NATA is the largest association of artisans and craftsmen in the whole federation with a larger percentage of its members in Lagos State.
“We are law abiding, well composed without an iota of trouble in our set-up; our election is not characterised with violence.
“So, we are appealing to the state government to save us from this demolition horror and embarrassment,’’ Fayeun said.
The chairman said more than four approved mechanic villages had already been demolished in Mushin, while two were demolished in Gbagada area.
He regretted that alternatives had yet to be provided for the technicians affected by the demolitions and their means of livelihood had been taken away.
