Bayelsa: Govt, police boss preach peace

Bayelsa State Government has called on political parties to conduct themselves well in order to ensure peace before, during and after the December 5 governorship election in the state. Thestate Commissioner for Information, Esueme Dan-Kikile, who spoke on behalf of the government at a news conference on Tuesday, said peace was the panacea for free, fair and credible election. Dan-Kikile’s peace call came just as the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Nasiru Oki, also urged political parties to shun inflammatory statements and hate campaigns, saying such could trigger violence. Dan-Kikile also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, the security agencies and stakeholders to be unbiased and impartial during the poll and to give all political parties level- playing field. The information commissioner condemned the act of violence allegedly perpetrated against the Peoples Democratic Party by the opposition party members. Dan-Kikile said, “As the ruling party in the state, we will continue to ask our members and supporters not to react or retaliate to attacks and provocation by the opposition party supporters. “We will continue to be law abiding and peaceful in our campaigns. Our party believes in issue-based campaigns aimed at improving the lives of the populace. “We have gone to many communities in the course of our campaigns and seen the challenges facing our people. We have agreed as a party to develop framework to affect local communities in every facet of life.” On his part, Oki said the police, in concert with other security agencies, were prepared for peaceful election in Bayelsa. He said the police had been giving all the political parties adequate protection during their campaigns and that the development had resulted in violence-free electioneering in the state. He also said that all the nooks and crannies of the state, including the riverine areas, were being heavily policed in order to avoid breakdown of law and order.
